Following the completion of medical school at McMaster University in 2007, Dr. Sharma completed her General Internal Medicine residency in 2011 and her Infectious Diseases fellowship in 2014. She also works at Hassle Free Clinic and is a clinical assistant in General Internal Medicine at the University Health Network. Her areas of clinical interest include HIV, women's health, and the health of marginalized communities.

Dr. Sharma is currently completing a Masters of Education in Health Professions Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. She is a research fellow at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education. Her research focus is on understanding how we frame, understand, teach, and evaluate advocacy. She is particularly interested in how medical education can be a means of empowering both patients and medical learners. She is a co-investigator on the CIHR-funded Collaboration for HIV in Medical Education (CHIME), a community-based participatory research project integrating people living with HIV as patient-instructors in medical training.
